The first day of Ramadan: Tough security measures in Algiers and its outskirts

El Khabar, 2 september 2008

Although tough security measures authorities have promised to implement during Ramadan, the reinforcements perceived yesterday were not very different from those being already adopted on the wake of recent assaults. Yet, security services have redoubled their presence around markets, some mosques, State institutions and police headquarters in Algiers, as well as strengthening control on the movement of cars coming to Algiers. The security scene noticed yesterday, which coincided with the first day of Ramadan, has not been different from the previous days which witnessed an increase in security measures as a result to terror attacks committed in Boumerdes, Bouira and Tizi Ouzou provinces. The only difference is the strong presence of security elements around markets in Algiers, where ambulant traders were chased away as to facilitate watching and controlling the comers and goers. The security plan set for protecting Algiers during Ramadan from terror attacks lies on strengthening checkpoints in the outskirts, as well as raising preventive measures in the centre city.
