Defence Ministry budget in 2009 reaches 6.25 b USD

President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has decided increasing the annual budget to be allocated in 2009 to Ministry of Defence to 383 b AD (about 6.25 billion USD), the annual sectional budget of 2009 unveiled. Yet, the budget of Defence Ministry in 2009 has tripled comparing with the one of 2008, estimated at 2.5 b USD.
The Defence budget has ranked in the top of sectional annual budgets, while largely exceeding that of services of the Presidency and Government. Budgets assigned to ministries of Education and Home Affairs ranked in the second position.
However, a portion of the Defence Ministry budget is to be devoted for the implementation of the Presidential Decree issued on last April. It stipulates the creation of military industry units, in charge of providing the Army with equipments, arms and ammunitions, as well as adopting high tech methods to curb imports of Defence Ministry.
Defence Ministry is to focus on the implementation of Army modernisation programme started in 2001 which target to make of the Army a professional corps. Algeria tends taking advantage of the improvement of her financial situation following the increase of her oil revenues, which are to reach 80 b USD by the end of this year.
