Gazprom to open a representation in Algiers

Russia and Algeria charged with monopoly

El Khabar, 29 august 2007

Russian Gazprom Company is to open a representation in Algiers as mentioned in gas exploration and pipelines installation agreement sealed between the Russian company and the state-owned oil-company Sonatrach, some press agencies reported.
Europe says that Algeria and Russia target to monopolise gas supply to Europe, mostly as the two countries cover more than 36% of Europe gas needs.
The abovementioned agreement is seen as an indirect rip-off by Europe. It coincides with the crisis between Russia and some Eastern Europe countries while Russia decided to interrupt supplying both Ukraine and Byelorussia as long as the gas-prices are not reviewed.
The Europeans’ fears have not been relived by Mines and Energy Minister Chakib Khelil who stated that Algeria and Russia are not intending to create a gas-trust in Europe.
However, the decision of Gazprom to open a representation in Algiers is to raise again the issue of creating a Gas-OPEC. This latter has gained the support of both Presidents Bouteflika and Putin.
